A Quick and Easy Coffee-Rubbed Steak Recipe

You can add flavor to a piece of meat in a matter of minutes for a low-calorie dish.

Although it may seem strange to pair coffee with steak, the robust notes of coffee actually enhance the flavor of the meat. With grilled vegetables and a side of black or pinto beans, this coffee-rubbed steak dish would be ideal. Alternatively, you could warm up some corn tortillas and distribute them to everyone so they can create their own mini tacos. In either case, be sure to give the beef time to rest (even if it extends the 10-minute meal to 12 or 13 minutes); if you cut into it too soon, the juices will spill out onto your cutting board rather than being absorbed by the meat. A home-cooked meal that will help you significantly reduce your calorie intake when compared to fast food is a virtue, just like patience.

You'll need

1/2 tablespoon of espresso or finely ground coffee

1/2 tsp of the chili powder

To taste, add salt and black pepper.

Skirt and flank steaks are two of our favorite cuts, but any steak would benefit from this coffee treatment, including strip, tenderloin, and ribeye.

Pic ode Gallo

one quartered lime

WAYS TO DO IT

  1. A grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet should be heated up.

  2. Along with a few generous pinches of salt and pepper, combine the coffee grounds with the chili powder.

  3. Rub the steak with the spice mixture all over. Depending on thickness, cook the beef for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until it is slightly firm but still yielding.

  4. Slice the steak thinly against the grain of the meat after allowing it to rest for at least five minutes. Serve with a lime wedge and a generous scoop of Pic ode Gallo.

Not just steak and coffee are unusual combinations that work surprisingly well. For a shock to your taste buds, try any of these tantalizing teams:

Tomato and watermelon with goat cheese crumbles and basil on top

Ice cream with olive oil and a dash of coarse sea salt

Balsamic vinegar, black pepper, and strawberries

Sandwich of bacon, banana, and peanut butter on toasted bread (the King would approve of this Elvis sandwich)

chunks of mango, pineapple, and papaya with lime and hot sauce on top.
